Up until now, I had never read any of David Sedaris’s work. Now, having read Calypso I will be devouring his entire back catalogue. I have truly never laughed so much reading a book, as I did with this one. I laughed out loud four times in the first chapter alone.
That’s not to say that it’s all light-hearted subjects. There are some painful family memories that he writes about in a sublime matter-of-fact way that indicates perfectly their difficulty, without falling into melodrama.
However, I can’t lie, it’s the witty neuroticism of David that I adored. His shrewd observations, tangential outbursts, hilarious shopping habits and glorious bickering with Hugh, his boyfriend. The whole Sedaris clan comes across as a total hoot, and I could read about their family gatherings for hours.
