The Riverside Bookshop

Location: 57 Tooley Street, Hays Galleria, London
Services: Bookseller
What I bought:  The Victim, P.D. James, and Glittering City, Cyprian Ekwensi

Whilst in London attending the HarperCollins Indie Thinking event for independent booksellers, I popped in to The Riverside Book Shop. Situated on the corner of Hays Galleries, and a stone’s throw from London Bridge underground, this bookshop is based across two floors.

As with pretty much any indie bookshop, space is at a premium. They have bold visible signposting to help you find your way around the masses of spines of books (they estimate 10,000 copies!)

When I’m visiting other indies, I try to have an organic shopping experience. It’s rare that I go in looking for a specific book, rather I let a book (or two, or three) choose me.

On this occasion I caught myself at the bottom of the stairs leading to the second floor, where there was a selection of short stories by different publishers. I opted for P.D. James’ The Victim (Faber & Faber, £3.50), and Cyprian Ekwensi’s Glittering City, (Penguin Modern, £1). These books are perfect for busy people, on-the-go. They are roughly 50 pages in length, pocket-size, lightweight and cheap. Great for commuting and easily accomplishable for people who don’t have much time to read.
